On February 26 we took a guided day trip bus tour to Chichen Itza! It was a long trip, but totally worth it! Our guides, Martin and Luiz, are of Mayan descent, and answered my questions about Mayan culture and then some!

On the way we stopped at Hacienda Chukum, and took a dip in the cenote. A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting when a collapse of limestone bedrock exposes ground water. It was shockingly cold and amazingly clear water! And-very refreshing!

By the time we made it to Chichen Itza, it was the hottest part of the day. Luiz gave an awesome and informative tour of this archaeological site, which was a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya people.

Unfortunately we were not allowed to climb the structure at this site because people have been vandalizing the ruins, which has resulted in it being cordoned off.

Here’s some fun facts for you: Chichen Itza means ‘at the mouth of the well of Itza’, is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

I’d love to go back when we’re not restricted for time and explore more.

The structures are fascinating!
